LLM: Overview

One can observe the pervasive nature of law in our day-to-day life. Awareness of the legal obligations and benefits can help properly function in day-to-day activities. However, aware of their legal rights, consumers make better consumers and decrease the chances of fraud and misleading. Similarly, an employee knowing their legal rights can surely escape the manipulative and misleading actions of the authorities in power. So, law knowledge can be very empowering and make a legal studies career more desirable. However, the reputation and power of becoming a lawyer surely account for why it is considered a prestigious profession.

However, to make a career in legal studies, one needs to start with getting admission into a good top law school. Once you have completed your bachelor’s in legal studies. Understand the global legal scenario, get in-depth knowledge, and become a law teacher; you must pursue LLM. Since LLM is a Master in Law (LLM) is a postgraduate degree that widens one’s scope for excellence in their legal career. So, it is a two-year programme. The LLM admissions are entrance test based. Various institutions across the country conduct LLM exams. Different universities or institutions release the LLM notification on their official websites.

LLM: Overview

All you need to know about LLM Exam is that LLM means Masters in Law. Therefore, it is a two-year postgraduate programme. It is offered by many universities across India, both private and government. Admission to LLM is through entrance exams. However, LLM exams are conducted at universities as well as national levels. CLAT PG is one of the national-level exams for admissions to LLM. However, DU, PU, BHU and many other universities conduct their entrance exams. AILET PG is the entrance exam that National Law University, Delhi conducts to provide admission to LLM and other postgraduate courses.

Since it is a  2-year postgraduate degree in law is called an LLM, or Master of Legislative Laws. Through extensive research on that topic of law, an LLM assists in developing a thorough understanding of a particular area of law. The Master of Laws programme provides some specialisations, including criminal, corporate, business, and international law.

At postgraduate levels, aspirants get trained in specific areas of specialisation like corporate law, Business Law, Criminal Law and many more. So that, after the aspirant completes their LLM degree, they can work as a Legal Consultant/Associate, Legal Document Reviewer, Notary, Advocates/Lawyers Trustee, Judges/Magistrates and Oath Commissioner. The aspirants can opt for private and government jobs in law firms, media houses, corporate offices, courthouses, real estate, NGOs, UNICEF/UNO and many more.

LLM: Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, students must earn either a 3-year LLB degree or a 5-year BA, BSc, or BBA LLB degree with an overall average of 50 to 60 per cent. However, LLM Admission 2023 s based on performance on various law admission tests, including the CLAT and LSAT, as well as other university-level exams, like the IPU CET and DUET.

NLSIU Bangalore, National Law University Delhi, West Bengali National University of Juridical Science, etc., are a few of the best LLM colleges that grant LLM degrees. Law school tuition typically costs between INR 1,00,000 and 2,50,000. Law and Social Transformation in India, Constitutionalism, Legal Research and Methodology, Judicial Process, and other topics are included in the LLM syllabus.

LLM Notification 2023

Since various universities offer LLM, both private and public, the candidate needs to keep a close eye on the official websites of these universities. However, they release the LLM notification through an official notice on their official websites.

CLAT PG

The Consortium of NLUs will release the centralised CLAT LLM official notification. However, the dates for CLAT PG 2023 have been announced. The exam will be held on 18th December 2022. The exam is being held almost 5 months ahead of its usual schedule.

Some important details about the LLM exam are:

1. The exam is conducted on a national level.
2. The exam will be conducted in online mode.
3. The application process will also be online. However, the exam duration will be 2 hours, i.e. 120 minutes.
4. The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) conducts the exam.
5. The official LLM notification for CLAT 2023 shall be released on www.consortiumofnlus.ac.in.

The tentative schedule for the CLAT PG exam is as follows:

AILET PG 

One of the important LLM exams includes AILET. This exam provides admission to the LLM programme at National Law University, Delhi. However, NLU, Delhi, is the only NLU that conducts its entrance exam for admissions to UG and PG courses in legal studies instead of accepting the CLAT score for admissions. Since the LLM notification for AILET will be released soon. However, the application process is expected to start in January 2023. Other important details about the exam:

1. This exam is conducted on a national level.
2. The mode of application will be online.
3. The exam will be in offline mode.
4. The exam duration is 1 hour and 30 minutes.

DU LLM 2023

Another very important entrance exam is the University of Delhi LLM exam. However, the aspirants can pursue their legal studies at the Faculty of Law of the University of Delhi through this exam. The official LLM notification for DU admissions has not been released yet. However, it is expected to be released by May/June 2023.

Some other important details about the exam are:

1. National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts DU LLM Exam. However, the same agency conducts all the entrance exams for University of Delhi UG and PG admissions.
2. The application process will be in online mode.
3. The exam will be in CBT (Computer based test) mode.
4. The courses offered admission to are 2-year and 3-year LLM.

Other important LLM exams

1. PU CET PG: Panjab University, Chandigarh, conducts this exam. Through PU CET PG, PU offers admission to various postgraduate programmes offered by various university departments. However, the Law Department of PU provides admission to LLM programmes. Therefore, the admission is based on the candidate’s PU CET PG score. The exam will be in offline mode. The duration of the exam is 90 minutes.
2. BHU PET: BHU, in association with NTA, conducts its entrance exam for admission to various postgraduate programmes. Since the exam is held one time a year. So, it is quite difficult to crack the exam. However, it is in online mode every year. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. However, the university is yet to release its official notification for the LLM exam.

Apart from these two, we have other courses like TISSNET, LSAT, AP PGLCET, SAAT, TS PGLCET, CUCET, and CUSAT CAT. However, some other LLM exams provide admission to aspirants to various postgraduate programmes in legal studies. Since many colleges are conducting their entrance exam for LLM. However, the candidates are advised to regularly check the college or university websites for official LLM notification 2023.
